WARDEN Studio’s Sharkmouth Retrofit is the premier solution for converting your existing electronic ear protection into a durable, tactical communication headset. Built for demanding environments, the Sharkmouth retrofit allows you to stay connected with both radios or smartphones, whether you're in the field, operating loud equipment, or making a phone call during a range day.

This conversion process was developed to provide an affordable, rugged, civilian-oriented alternative to high end tactical headsets. The retrofit replaces your existing 3.5MM jack with an improved 3.5MM connector, and allows you to connect to a phone or radio using various detachable cables. Unlike other offerings on the market, our microphone is hard-mounted to your ear protection, ensuring durability and reliability in all conditions. With WARDEN Studio’s communication retrofit service, your headset will be ready to provide clear communication in any situation.

Key Features:

High-Noise Environment Ready

Designed for environments with extreme noise, such as lawn care, shooting ranges, or working near heavy machinery, the aviation-grade noise-canceling microphone delivers crystal-clear sound. Whether you're on the phone or the radio, others will hear you clearly no matter your surroundings.

Unmatched Versatility in Connections

The Sharkmouth retrofit supports both radio and phone connections. Connect to your smartphone using a 3.5MM or USB-C cable, and be able to make phone calls or use PTT apps like Zello directly from your headset. Swap the detachable cable, and easily connect to your radio using a TP120 cable through a Push-to-Talk (PTT).

Superior Hard-Mounted Microphone Design

Unlike other options on the market that use hook-and-loop or adhesive-mounted microphones, the Sharkmouth retrofit hard-mounts the microphone to your ear protection. This design ensures the microphone won't detach or become loose due to temperature changes, moisture, storage, or accidental snags. The durability and performance are unmatched, even in harsh conditions.

Connect to Any Radio

Unlike integrated radio headsets and add-ons that offer only short-range communication, the Sharkmouth retrofit allows you to connect to any powerful radio of your choice using the appropriate PTT and cables, giving you maximum flexibility in communication range.

Important Information

During the retrofit process, we only add microphone communication ability, we do not change the underlying audio amplification and hear-through performance of your ear protection. Thus, it is important to understand how your electronic ear protection works when you connect it to an audio source:

Walker Headset:

  • Phone audio can be heard with active hear-through ON or OFF
  • Active hear-through will dramatically decrease when phone audio is played through a 3.5MM jack
  • Active hear-through will dramatically decrease when plugged into a USB-C cable or adaptor

Howard Leight Headset:

  • Phone audio can only be heard when the active hear-through is ON
  • Active hear-through remains at a constant level when phone audio is played through a 3.5MM jack
  • Active hear-through remains at a constant level when phone audio is played through a USB-C cable or adapter
  • Due to the design of Howard Leight amplification, it is possible for the microphone signal to experience interference when using a USB-C cable into a phone. To resolve this issue, ensure the cable is not coiled or looped around itself. This issue does not occur during PTT/Radio communication.

Sordin Headset:

  • Phone audio can only be heard when the headset and active hear-through is ON
  • Sordin ear protection offers a "Comms" preset that shuts off active hear-through while still allowing for listening to radio/phone. This preset can be used, but is not required - comms will still function using other hear-through presets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this work with my already existing radio?

A: Most likely. The overwhelming majority of civilian FRS/GMRS/HAM radios will all accept a 2.2K Condenser microphone without additional amplification. Military radios will generally look for a “Dynamic” (typically 150 Ohm) microphone and are not compatible at this time. (Interested in a Dynamic mic setup? Click here and let us know!)

Do you offer a “Dynamic” microphone?

Do you offer retrofit services for headsets other than the Walker Razer and Howard Leight Impact Sport?

Not at this time. If you use a different headset and would like it converted, click here and let us know.

My ear protection already has a 3.5MM jack and I can plug it into my phone. Why do I need the conversion service?

A: While you can listen to your phone through the ear protection right now, you cannot talk on the phone through your ear protection. Most electronic ear protection that comes wired with a 3.5MM jack are wired only for listening and have no ability to output a microphone signal. Our conversion process replaces the existing 3.5MM jack and rewires the audio to include the microphone connection.

What modifications do you perform to the ear protection?

A: While you can use any off-the-shelf 3.5MM cable, WARDEN cables offer a few advantages. They are custom manufactured with thick TPU jackets that do not degrade under intense outdoor UV light and remain flexible in cold temperatures. The cables are reinforced with Kevlar strands to give them superior strength and durability if the cable gets snagged or you drop your headset with the cable connected to it. Finally, the bend relief of the cables is specifically designed to keep the cable from breaking or degrading at the connector during intense usage (looking at you, Apple charging cables…)

What all is included with the conversion?

The conversion includes only the microphone boom and all the work to rewire and attach that microphone. No cables are included with the conversion, but they can be bundled together for a discount! Add any cable to your order for $5 off, or choose the deluxe bundle for all 3 cables at a $20 discount.

How do I connect to a radio?

A: To connect to a radio, you must connect the headset to a Push-to-Talk (PTT). We recommend that you use a high quality, name brand PTT for best performance. TCI/Safariland and Disco32 are two companies that have highly reputable PTT offerings for a variety of radios. Any non-amplified U94 PTT designed for your radio should work, but be aware that off-brand Amazon/eBay sold U94 style PTTs have an inherent risk of poor quality and spotty functionality. (Interested in a WARDEN Push-to-Talk? Click here and let us know!)

Does the conversion affect how my headset currently works?

A: No. Your electronic ear protection will continue to function just as it does now. The audio amplification/noise cancellation are completely unaffected.

Can I connect my new retrofitted headset to my phone and use Zello or other PTT apps?

A: Absolutely! This was a core use case that the retrofit was designed around. The microphone was specifically chosen for seamless integration with your smartphone and will work great for app-based phone communications.

How is the WARDEN retrofit better or different than the Walker Razor microphone/radio adaptor attachment?

A: The Walker Razor attachment is a standalone FRS radio - meaning it is basically a walkie-talkie affixed to the side of your ear protection. It has extremely limited range (mostly good for line-of-sight only), and it does not allow you to talk on your own radio or allow you to connect to a phone or another device. The WARDEN retrofit allows you to connect to ANY kind of radio you want, including more powerful GMRS and HAM radios, or connect to your phone to make calls or utilize a PTT application. Additionally, the WARDEN retrofit is much higher quality compared to the Razer radio adaptor - the microphone is an aviation grade noise-canceling mic, and the plastics are designed for the harshest conditions, and will not break, shatter, or warp in extreme environments.

Do you sell complete headsets?

A: Not at this time. We only offer conversion services for your existing ear protection. (Interested in a WARDEN Headset? Click here and let us know!)
