FAQ
Ear Protection Retrofit FAQ
Do you offer retrofit services for headsets other than the Sordin Supreme Pro-X, Walker Razer, and Howard Leight Impact Sport?
A: Not at this time. If you use a different headset and would like it converted, click here and let us know.
Will this work with my already existing radio?
A: Most likely. The overwhelming majority of civilian FRS/GMRS/HAM radios will all accept a 2.2K Condenser microphone without additional amplification. Military radios will generally look for a “Dynamic” (typically 150 Ohm) microphone and are not compatible at this time. (Interested in a Dynamic mic setup? Click here and let us know!)
I don’t have a radio right now, what kind should I get?
There are many different kinds of radios out there that you might look into: FRS Radios (known often as “walkie-talkies”) are low-power, low-cost, and do not require any license or permit to operate. GMRS Radios are more powerful and thus longer range, and share many of the same frequencies as FRS, meaning you can talk back and forth to FRS users without issue, but require a license to operate. HAM Radios are the most fully featured, most powerful civilian radios you can use, but require both a license and taking a standardized test to operate.
The one thing you need on a radio to connect to a headset is an external port (2-Pin ports are some of the most common) that you can plug a Push-to-Talk into. (Interested in a WARDEN radio? Click here and let us know!)
What all is included with the retrofit?
The conversion includes only the microphone boom and all the work to rewire and attach that microphone. No cables are included with the conversion, but they can be bundled together for a discount! Add any cable to your order for $5 off, or choose the deluxe bundle for all 3 cables at a $20 discount.
How do I connect to a radio?
A: To connect to a radio, you must connect the headset to a Push-to-Talk (PTT). We recommend that you use a high quality, name brand PTT for best performance. TCI/Safariland and Disco32 are two companies that have highly reputable PTT offerings for a variety of radios. Any non-amplified U94 PTT designed for your radio should work, but be aware that off-brand Amazon/eBay sold U94 style PTTs have an inherent risk of poor quality and spotty functionality. Can I connect my new retrofitted headset to my phone and use Zello or other PTT apps?
A: Absolutely! This was a core use case that the retrofit was designed around. The microphone was specifically chosen for seamless integration with your smartphone and will work great for app-based phone communications.
I’m not confident on if this will work for my setup. Can you confirm if it will?
A: Absolutely! Contact us with details on your setup and we will be happy to walk you through compatibility and confirm function!
